Family Camp united families and scouts for an exciting outdoor experience. The campsite provided a scenic backdrop for setting up tents and creating a cozy atmosphere. The dessert competition showcased scouts’ culinary skills with delightful treats. The nearby lake offered opportunities for canoeing. A heartwarming Sunday dinner brought families closer, fostering connections and creating cherished memories.
Yosemite – September 2014

Our annual Fall trip to Yosemite, one of the crown jewels of the National Park System, took place in September. We departed on Friday evening so we could have a full-day in the park on Saturday. We found our campsite in the dark and set up our tents using flashlights. Scouts drove into the park and hiked to Lake Elizabeth. The scenery was breathtaking and the company doesn’t get any better. We enjoyed a great campfire dinner and scouts entertained all with skits and songs at campfire. Sunday morning started with another great campfire meal, then Scouts Own. On the way back, we stopped at The Bass Pro Shop in Manteca.
Summer Camp 2014

The troop’s highlight event of the year did not disappoint. We benefited from our ability to build our camp where conditions were best. Even though many reservoirs had very little water we found a great lake to continue our tradition of water oriented activities. Summit Lake, elevation 7100′ in the Stanislaus National Forest. From July 16-18, older scouts and adults built our camp: a kitchen that can feed up to 75 people at each meal, a safe waterfront area for swimming and canoeing, latrines, dishwashing lines, assembly/flag areas, camping sites – all using pioneering skills – no nails necessary.
From the 19th – 26th it was the quintessential summer camp, canoeing, swimming, hiking, outdoor skills, games, merit badges, campfires, skits, astronomy talks and our signature Mountain Man event – jumping into the lake at 7:00 in the morning! When all was cleaned up and put away on the last day we restored the area to the way we found it – or even a little better.
Canoe Outing – June 2014

The destination of our second canoe outing of the year was Lake Del Valle in Livermore. The relatively close location gave us plenty of time in the water. We arrived at the lake mid-morning and setup camp while the canoes were towed to the marina for inspection. After swim check and lunch we headed out for a tour of the lake. There was plenty of wildlife to see including herons, vultures, and geese. Saturday evening we had a great dinner and campfire. Sunday began with breakfast, Scout’s Own, and more canoeing including lunch out on the lake. It was a great outing.
Webelos X-treme

Troop 27 and Crew 27 participated in the BSA Pacific Skyline Council’s annual Webelos X-treme Event. Our scouts and associated Venturing Crew setup and operated 2 fun activities: a climbing tripod and canoe catamarans. The event allows Webelos to experience some Boy Scout activities, lets Webelos families become familiar with some Boy Scout troops and facilitates bridging from Cub Scouts.
San Francisco Bay Sailing

The San Francisco Bay is considered one of the most fun and windiest places to sail in the world and it is right in our backyard. Some days it can be foggy and some days sunny. Sailing in the bay can be very rough and wet so wear layers. On the other hand, sailing can be beautiful with the view of the Golden Gate and San Francisco.
This year, the 34th America’s Cup races were held in San Francisco. It is a sailing race dating back to 1851 and has boats that go up to more than 45 knots. Safety is a priority, and all scouts wore PFDs at all times. We sailed most of the day and had own sack lunch on board. The America’s Cup races took place that day. This was a good opportunity for scouts to experience sailing activity and practice their scout skills. Sailing involves the use of lots of knots.

Summer Camp 2012

This summer our troop continued its unique, 50-plus-year tradition of building its own summer camp at a lake in the high Sierra. 20 participants in the Advance Camp prepared the camp by cleaning up what others had left behind and creating facilities that included a large kitchen, three latrines, impressive flagpole, waterfront and much more.
The troop endured several miles of rough roads to reach Sawmill Lake where they were richly rewarded. Summer camp included 40 scouts (patrols, Senior Patrol Leaders and the Instructor Corps) who participated in swimming and boating, navigation & ropework skills, working with others, (propane-fired) campfire experiences and having lots of fun, all in a beautiful wilderness setting.
Some advancement opportunities included a 5-mile troop hike, First Class orienteering course, Trail to First Class requirements and various merit badges, including Camping, Canoeing, Communications, several crafts merit badges, Emergency Preparedness, Environmental Science, Fishing, Geocaching, Lifesaving, Nature, Orienteering, Photography, Pioneering, Sailing and – of course – Swimming.
There were patrol contests such as canoe races, wood chopping and the two-man saw. The scouts enjoyed games like Tug-O-War, Two Ball and the very popular White Bomb. Five scouts completed the mile swim as well.
Highlights included a night of lightning and heavy rain, crossing the Lake Faucherie spillway during our 5-mile hike and bridging new scouts across a monkey bridge. We will remember the beautiful scenery, clear water and relationships that deepened during the outing. Of course we followed “leave no trace” principles and restored the area to its natural condition before we departed. Overall, this was an outstanding summer camp experience!

The troop will continue its tradition of “doing something different” for the final meeting of any month that has a fifth Tuesday. This month the PLC (Patrol Leaders’ Council) has planned a trip to the San Francisco Giants baseball game vs. the Diamondbacks.
