The troop decided to hold our fifth Tuesday event (the troop does not have a regular troop meeting during months where there are five Tuesdays but instead goes on a fun outing) on November 8th and we decided to take a tour of San Francisco with Mr. Toad’s Tour. It was a beautiful San Francisco fall evening. We rode in style, in pre 1930’s vintage, open aired, touring cars which run on clean propane fuel.
On October 1st, 2011, Troop 27 celebrated its 60th anniversary with a splendid event. Nearly 200 people spanning several generations of scouts, past, present and future came to reunite with old friends, meet new friends, and remember the important part T27 played in their lives. [Read more…]

On September 11, 2011 at the Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Station we honored those who lost their lives ten years ago. With the help of Troop 27 we made that day more special. We had two fantastic buglers, Brian and Everett , and color guard to make our lowering of the flag perfect. At Kings Mountain Fire Station we unveiled the 9-11 Memorial, which will stand forever in remembrance of all the civilians, firefighters and emergency personnel that we miss so much. Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Station is in Woodside. It is also home of the grounds for the annual Art Fair where I was fortunate to be able to do My Eagle Project. My project included pouring a cement pad under a sink, sanding and staining a bench, painting the sink counter and backsplash along with burying a water line. I got involved with the memorial after being asked by a volunteer firefighter who acquired a ten pound piece steel from World Trade Center. The piece of steel is sitting within a globe upon a boulder and all that is resting on the cement pad I ended up making for them. It means a lot that my involvement was recognized and is the base for such an important remembrance. None of this could have happened or have been as memorable and successful without the help of Troop 27.

On August 20th and 21st, Troop 27 embarked on yet another great outing: whitewater canoeing on the Stanislaus River. We arrived at the river around noon and unloaded the canoes. While the adults moved the cars to the end of the stretch of river we were going on, scouts waited in the shade where some scouts went in a still section of the river. After the adults returned, we were assigned canoe buddies, packed lunches in coolers, and started on our 13 mile trip. It was a very nice river with calm stretches and stretches with rapids. We only had a few canoes capsize, and everyone reached the final destination safely. We then hiked a short distance to our campsites, had backpacking style dinners (adding hot water), had a campfire, and went to sleep. Most scouts chose to sleep under the stars and we were lucky to have such a great view of the sky. The next morning, we packed up, had a backpacking breakfast, and listened to Mr. Frydenlund’s Scouts’ Own about obedience and disobedience and three types of laws: natural laws, just laws, and trivial laws. After a camp sweep, we hiked out and unloaded the canoes again. Instead of doing a short stretch of rapids, we decided to do the same 13 mile course we had done the day before. In the middle of the course, some scouts took part in rescuing some rafters under the direction of Mr. Frydenlund. We then continued along the river and reached the end smoothly. This experience was undoubtedly skill-enhancing and great preparation for the September canoe outing.

For the August 9 meeting, T27 chose to do something different: we walked across the Golden Gate Bridge. We arrived at 5:00 at the church, and when everybody was there we were divided into our driving groups. We made a stop at In & Out before continuing on to San Francisco. We arrived by the bridge at around 7:00, and started soon after. Along the way, Mr. Moriarty gave us some history about the bridge. Some scouts decided to make it a race. At the end of the bridge, we had a bathroom break, then started on our way back. It was getting a little dark by this time, but this didn’t stop some scouts from running across most of the way. From one end of the bridge to the other and back, the distance was about 3.4 miles. This type of meeting may become more common in the future, especially in the summer. It was a refreshing change from the usual meeting.

From July 16 to July 23, Troop 27 went on the most central outing of the year – 2011 Summer Camp at Lake Spaulding. For more than a week, scouts camped, learned, and had a great time at this unique T27 experience. [Read more…]
